Irish Residency is granted to non-EU or EU nationals allowing the person to live in Ireland on a long-term basis, with almost all of the rights and entitlement of Irish citizens.

Residency can be granted for a number of different reasons and for different periods.

Foreign nationals married to an EU citizen may apply for a 5-year Stamp 4 EU Family Residency Permission.

Persons who have been living with an EU citizen, as a couple, for a minimum of 2 years, may apply for Irish residency as a De-Facto Partner. 

Other dependents of EU citizens may also be eligible for Irish Residency if certain conditions are met.

In certain circumstance where a separation or divorce has occurred the foreign national may be eligible to apply for Permission to remain in their own right.  


Parent of an
Irish citizen child

People who are parents of a minor child who hold Irish citizenship are eligible to apply for Permission to Remain on this basis. 

Only parents who are actively involved in their child's life will be considered.

Permission may be given for 1 or 3 years.


Foreign national married to Irish citizen may apply for a Stamp 4 Residency Permission.

Spouse of an Irish citizen

Persons who are living with Irish citizens as a couple, for a minimum of 2 years, may apply for Irish residency as a De-Facto Partner. 

Children of an Irish citizen who are 23 or younger are similarly entitled to Stamp 4 Residency Permission. 

Other dependents may also be free to apply and will be considered on a case by case basis. 


Long-Term Residency

Foreign nationals who have lived and worked in Ireland for at least 60 months on Employment Permit conditions may apply for a 5 year residency permission (Stamp 4).

Workers who have Critical Skills Permits are entitled to apply for their Stamp 4 after only 2 years of residency in Ireland. 

Persons who are living with Irish citizens as a couple, for a minimum of 2 years, may apply for Irish residency as a De-Facto Partner. 

Children of an Irish citizen who are 23 or younger are similarly entitled to Stamp 4 Residency Permission. 

Other dependents may also be free to apply and will be considered on a case by case basis.
